Sometimes you just have to jump and figure it out later 🌊
Had an anxiety from open water, since I almost drowned in the Altantic and saw a shark (yes, happened in 1 accident 😁).
As a psychologist I know that the best way to get rid of your fears is to face them; heads on, without thinking too much of the consequences. Still, it took me a while to get used to the idea of exposing myself to my own irrational beliefs.
Exposure is scary, but scary things are not necessarily dangerous. Exposure is intimidating primarily because we expect our fears to escalate indefinitely when we are placed in a feared situation. But nothing rises indefinitely. And fear, if you face it, will soon begin to subside as you habituate.
This morning, I did just that and it worked! Went for my first surfing lesson, and had to spend a good amount of time by myself in deep water where I couldn't see anything underneath me. Had a blast!
Turns out, nothing scary in the water, other than my thoughts. But that, I figured out after I jumped 😉
